Course Description:

Puppetry and Community is an active hands on course that explores the history of Puppetry in the world and different forms of Puppetry. This class is designed to involve students in experimenting with creativity and involvement in community. Puppetry and Community is a collaboration between the SU Soling Program and the Open Hand Theater. This class seeks to involve students from a wide range of disciplines. The willingness to experiment, to be creative, and be involved are important attributes. This class project entails working with the 3rd grade of an inner city elementary school in the creation of a large-scale Puppetry pageant. This class requires an additional 10 hours of community service. Most classes are held off campus at Open Hand Theater's new location at Shoppingtown Mall, 3649 Erie Blvd. E. Suite # 3, Syracuse, NY 13214 (transportation provided). The Soling program is a team-based collaborative, problem-based learning environment that emphasizes active learning. The program prepares undergraduates for both advanced study and future employment by encouraging them to develop problem solving, conflict resolution, presentation, and technical skills while working on a project for the University and the local community.
