Course Description:

This course examines expressions of popular culture in modern Japan. Over the course of the semester, we will consider literature, film, music and manga in historical contexts ranging from the 17th century origins of urban consumer culture, through the violent age of wartime and empire in the early 20th century, and into our own era of globalization today. Ranging over this vast and varied cultural historical territory, we will think through how “pop culture” in Japan has been fueled by commercial agents, modern sensibilities and irresistible aesthetics.
