Course Description:

As we embrace the concept of community engagement, we must think about the diverse community stakeholders with whom we are engaging. In this course we explore the people that serve this city and its neighborhoods in various ways. In addition, we challenge the ignorance, stereotypes, and assumptions that serve to separate us from them. Some of the questions we will address: How do we define ourselves spatially? How do we define ourselves socially? Are we, as an academic community, encompassed in a larger community? Are there leaders and life beyond the margins of the University and the Connective Corridor? If so, who are “they”? What are they doing to make this city a decent place to live, work, and play for all of its citizens.
