Course Description:

War and Peace, the epic historic tale of love, war, and family, challenges readers to explore the inner spiritual values of self and Russian society of the nineteenth century. Leo Tolstoy wrote in his famous diaries, “The hero of my tale, whom I love with all the power of my soul, whom I have tried to portray in all its beauty, who has been, is, and always will be beautiful – is Truth.”

“Conquering War and Peace” (HNR 240) will offer students the opportunity to read one of the greatest books ever written, review critical commentary, watch film adaptations, perform dramatizations of scenes, write subjective analyses, and research an approved theme of choice for a final written paper or project. No prerequisites required, although past students of LIT 226 and/or Russian History may find this an especially enriching complement to their previous study of both Tolstoy and the War of 1812.
