Course Description:

Environmental groups, religious organizations, social service entities, arts and cultural collectives, health organizations and even organizations that guide us through the process of dying- they all have one thing in common: they are not-for-profit organizations. They are created, developed and they fulfill their missions every day under state and federal guidelines and statutes. In this course you will learn how to set up your own not-for-profit organization, and explore the wider implications of such entities in promoting the social good. Not-for-profit organizations are community engagement engines. They provide a wide variety of career and volunteer opportunities including administrators, artists, architects, lawyers, entrepreneurs, social workers, journalists, marketing specialists, designers and a host of others. The course will begin with the study of federal 501c3 tax law and how it defines not-for-profits and impacts them vis-à-vis mission, administrative structure, fiscal checks and balances, constituent engagement, etc. Students will also learn the step-by-step process of creating a 501c3 entity including navigating the Department of State: Division of Corporations, the Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Taxation. The course will also explore funding (particularly government funding and private foundations) and strategic planning which are both are essential elements to not-for-profit health and longevity. Students will connect with not-for-profit and government professionals. The community representatives will include executives, funders, board members, government officials, and others. Assignments will be in depth and varied and will include analyzing and drafting mission and vision statements, preparing case studies to identify best practices, understanding and articulating the roles and interaction between professionals in the field, constituents and boards of directors. The midterm assignment will be a collaborative research project presented to the class. The course will culminate with a critical thinking writing assignment that will reflect on broader issues within the current state of the field.
