Course Description:

Baseball themed literature (Twain’s Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Bouton’s Ball Four, Kahn’s The Boys of Summer; theatre (Damn Yankees, Casey at the Bat, Fences); film (Pride of the Yankees, Bang the Drum Slowly, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Moneyball, etc.) and advertising (too numerous) have all used baseball to great financial gain. In doing so, they have made baseball a particularly important part of the American social fabric and influenced how America sees itself. This class will visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY and also take advantage of the University’s proximity to the Washington Nationals’ Triple A affiliate, the Syracuse Chiefs. Course texts will incorporate a wide range of material from the 19th, 20th and 21st century to provide a broad range of literature review. In this way, the central work of the course will work to evaluate the ways in which baseball has helped shape contemporary literature, film and advertising across more than 150 years. Included as part of the class will be a media-based project that requires students to individually create fiction or film that incorporates baseball as a central theme, metaphor or significant driver of the student’s narrative.
