Course Description:

A hands-on class that will introduce basic knitting skills and strategies while working to create items to donate to others in need (premature babies, people undergoing chemotherapy, refugees living in CNY). Students will learn the basic stitches that are the foundation of all knitting projects, the use of straight, circular, and double-pointed needles, and beginner projects that will strengthen learned skills while producing scarves and hats for people of various ages. A short paper on the history of knitting will be required and will be included in the discussion. Short literature on knitting will also be presented and discussed in addition to the instruction in knitting. It is anticipated that three projects can be completed in the course of the semester. Patterns will be provided by the instructor, as well as information on the rudimentary skills that will inform all future knitting projects. You Tube videos and knitting instruction web sites such as Ravelry will be introduced for further support and instruction. The course will count as 15 civic engagement hours; students must submit their hours on the Honors website.
