Course Description:

Bioethics and disability studies share many of the same core concerns such as prenatal testing, parenting, and health care for people with atypical bodies. However, a gulf exists between the two fields. Some bioethicists believe disability studies has little to offer health care professionals. Disability studies scholars counter that health care settings are dangerous for vulnerable populations, a fact bioethicists have failed to acknowledge. Using a life cycle approach, students will examine how bioethics and disability studies differ and whether common ground can be found between two mutually antagonistic fields.
