Course Description:

The term ‘fake news’ is thrown around a lot these days, but what does it signify? For some, it is means “anything I don’t agree with”; for others, it is the manipulation and falsification of reality. Regardless, it has become something that is unavoidable in today’s political and media cultures. As educated and concerned citizens, we have a responsibility both to understand this phenomenon and to consider how to engage effectively with it.

Participants in this class will read widely in a variety of genres that reflect upon the history and current reality of “fake news.” We will begin, for example, by reading George Orwell’s 1984, and will also consider the “Lost Cause” mythology of the Confederacy to understand that “fake news” is neither entirely new nor exclusively American. But we will pay considerable attention to how social media have shaped current understandings, as well as possible mechanisms of response. Over the course of the term, students will produce work on a term project that will allow them to explore a particular facet of the subject that especially interests them.

This class differs from most at SU in that it is intergenerational. In addition to those enrolled for credit, participants will include approximately ten people from Oasis, a program for mature learners (generally, retired professionals) in the Syracuse community. Their lived experiences and perspectives on politics and the news (real and fake) will add powerfully to our discussions and will be a major component of what this course is all about.
